Why Do the Murph Workout?

Ready for Murph

Every year, CrossFit athletes around the world take on one of the most meaningful workouts in fitness — the Murph. But Murph is more than just a workout. It’s about grit, sacrifice, community, and pushing beyond what you thought was possible. Join us on May 25, 2026, at CrossFit Versatile in Greensboro, N.C.

What Is Murph?

The Murph workout is performed in honor of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL who gave his life serving our country in Afghanistan. Murph was one of his favorite workouts, originally called “Body Armor.”

The workout consists of:

  • 1 Mile Run
  • 100 Pull-Ups
  • 200 Push-Ups
  • 300 Air Squats
  • 1 Mile Run

Traditionally, athletes wear a weighted vest, but that is completely optional.

Murph is often completed on or around Memorial Day as a way to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It’s a chance to remember that the discomfort we feel during the workout is temporary — while the sacrifice made by our heroes was permanent.

Murph Is for Everyone

One of the most powerful things about Murph is that anyone can participate.

At CrossFit Versatile, we believe fitness should meet you where you are. That means Murph can be scaled to fit every athlete, whether it’s your first CrossFit workout or your hundredth.

Scaling options may include:

  • Shortening the run distance
  • Using ring rows or banded pull-ups
  • Modifying push-ups
  • Reducing reps
  • Partnering with a friend
  • Skipping the weighted vest

The goal isn’t perfection. The goal is participation, effort, and honoring the meaning behind the workout.

More Than a Workout

Murph has a way of bringing people together that few workouts can.

You’ll see athletes cheering each other on through every round, high-fiving after difficult sets, and encouraging someone through that final mile. It’s a reminder that CrossFit is not just about fitness — it’s about community.

There’s something special about suffering together, supporting one another, and crossing the finish line as a team. The energy, encouragement, and camaraderie are what make Murph unforgettable.

Why We Keep Coming Back

Murph challenges us physically, but it also reminds us why we train:

  • To become stronger
  • To build resilience
  • To support one another
  • To honor something bigger than ourselves

Whether you finish with a weighted vest, scaled movements, or alongside a partner, completing Murph is something to be proud of.

This Memorial Day, we invite you to join our community, challenge yourself, and experience what Murph is truly about. Hope to see you for Murph at CrossFit Versatile in Greensboro, N. C.!

Together, we remember. Together, we grow stronger.

When people first walk through our doors, they usually come for one reason—to get a great workout. But what keeps them coming back day after day isn’t just the programming or the results. It’s something deeper. It’s the community. At CFV in Greensboro, NC, we’ve built more than a CrossFit gym. We’ve created a place where fitness meets family, where every member feels supported, encouraged, and genuinely welcomed. A Community That Lifts You Up From the moment class starts, you’ll notice something different. There are high-fives before the workout even begins, coaches checking in, and members encouraging one another like they’ve been friends for years. During the workout, the energy builds: Teammates cheering each other through tough reps Encouraging words when things get hard That final push when you don’t think you have anything left And when the workout ends? More high-fives. More smiles. More “you crushed that.” Because here, no one works out alone. Celebrating Every Victory—Big or Small One of the most powerful moments in our gym is when someone hits a personal record. The bell rings. The room erupts. Everyone celebrates. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been doing CrossFit for years or just started last week—your win is everyone’s win. And just as powerful? When the last person is finishing a workout and the entire class stays to cheer them on. That moment captures everything we stand for: ๐Ÿ‘‰ Support ๐Ÿ‘‰ Encouragement ๐Ÿ‘‰ Community Fitness for Every Body A common misconception about CrossFit is that you have to be “in shape” to start. The truth is, CrossFit is designed for everyone. Every workout at CFV is: Scalable to your fitness level Adaptable for beginners and experienced athletes alike Focused on progress, not perfection Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned athlete, you’ll get a workout that challenges you—in the best way possible. A Perfect Fit for Busy Families We know life is busy—especially for parents. That’s why CFV is designed to support the whole family. Childcare That Makes It Easy Our childcare room is full of toys, laughter, and usually a group of playmates. Moms and dads can focus on their workout knowing their kids are nearby, safe, and having fun. Leading by Example Even better? Your children get to see firsthand what it means to take care of your health, work hard, and grow stronger—both physically and mentally. That’s a powerful lesson that lasts far beyond the gym. More Than a Gym—A Place to Connect After class, no one rushes out the door. Instead, members stick around in our social area to: Relax and catch their breath Chat with friends Enjoy some free snacks Build real relationships Because the connections made here go far beyond workouts. They turn into friendships, support systems, and yes—a second family. Why CFV Is Different There are plenty of gyms in Greensboro, NC. But what makes CFV special is simple: It’s not just about fitness. It’s about people. It’s about: Showing up for each other Celebrating progress Creating a welcoming space for families Building friendships that last Come for the Workout. Stay for the Community. If you’re searching for CrossFit in Greensboro, NC that offers more than just a place to exercise, CFV is where you belong.
