Your First CrossFit Class: What to Actually Expect
Learn how CrossFit classes are designed to support beginners and help every athlete succeed.
Starting something new can feel intimidating—but your first CrossFit class might surprise you in the best way possible.
At CrossFit Versatile, we believe fitness should be welcoming, supportive, and scalable for every person who walks through the door. Whether you’re brand new to working out or returning after time away, CrossFit can be adjusted to fit YOUR fitness level.
You do not need to “get in shape” before starting.
You just need to start.
Expect a Warm Welcome
One of the biggest misconceptions about CrossFit is that you have to already be fit to join.
That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Most members remember exactly what it felt like walking into their first class—and that’s why the community is so supportive. You’ll quickly notice people encouraging each other, celebrating wins, and helping one another grow stronger together.
You are never expected to know everything on day one.
The Warm-Up
Every class starts with a guided warm-up to prepare your body for movement and help prevent injury.
This may include:
- Light cardio
- Mobility work
- Stretching
- Bodyweight movements
- Rowing, biking, or jogging
The goal is to get your body moving and ready for the workout ahead.
Our coaches guide you through everything step-by-step so you feel comfortable and confident.
Strength & Skill Work
Before the workout, most classes include a strength or skill portion.
This may involve:
- Squats
- Deadlifts
- Presses
- Kettlebells
- Dumbbells
- Pull-up progressions
- Core work
Don’t worry if you’ve never touched a barbell before.
Every movement can be modified, scaled, or adjusted to fit your experience and ability level. Coaches help you choose appropriate weights and teach proper technique so you can safely improve over time.
CrossFit is designed to meet you where you are.
The Workout of the Day (WOD)
This is the main workout portion of class—often called the “WOD.”
Each day is different, which keeps workouts fun, challenging, and exciting.
You may see movements like:
- Rowing
- Running or walking
- Box step-ups
- Burpees
- Dumbbells
- Kettlebells
- Bodyweight exercises
Some workouts are fast-paced and short. Others focus more on endurance or strength.
The best part? Everyone works at their own pace.
You are never competing against others. You are simply working to become stronger, healthier, and more confident than you were yesterday.
Everything Can Be Scaled
This is one of the most important things to know about CrossFit.
Every workout can be adjusted to fit YOUR needs.
Can’t run yet? Walk.
Need lighter weights? Absolutely.
Not ready for pull-ups? We have modifications.
Scaling workouts is not a weakness—it’s smart training.
The goal is progress, not perfection.
Cool Down & Recovery
After the workout, class typically ends with stretching and cool down movements to help recovery and reduce soreness.
It’s also the time when people connect, laugh, and celebrate finishing the workout together.
That community atmosphere is what makes CrossFit different.
More Than a Workout
At CrossFit Versatile, people come for fitness—but stay for the community.
You’ll find support, accountability, encouragement, and friendships that extend beyond the gym walls.
No matter your age or fitness level, you belong here.
